Smarter AI Does Not Automatically Become More Moral
Capability and motivation are separate dimensions: intelligence does not guarantee benevolence. Across many possible AI minds, common instrumental needs such as power, survival, compute, and concealment may emerge even when ultimate goals differ.
- Possible AI minds span a wider space than human personalities
- High capability can combine with good or bad motives
- Power and continued operation support many different goals
- Misaligned systems may have strategic reasons to hide intentions
“you have a kind of orthogonality between capability and motivation meaning you can combine them in pretty much any different way”
“you could have strategic incentives for deception or for sandbagging or underplaying your capabilities”
