A Habit Is Not the Same as an Addiction
Eyal distinguishes automatic behavior from persistent compulsive dependency that harms the user. Ethical product design may aim to form healthy habits, but addiction should never be the intent even when it can emerge as an unintended byproduct at scale.
- A habit is behavior performed with little or no conscious thought
- Addiction is compulsive dependency that causes harm
- Designing for addiction is unethical
- Healthy user behavior should remain the product goal
“an addiction is a persistent compulsive dependency on a behavior or substance that causes harm to the user”
