Gartenberg's counterintuitive finding, verified with electrodes on real sleepers, is that sound disrupts sleep through abruptness rather than volume. A plane's loud low drum barely disturbs sleep; an air conditioner clicking on — innocuous, quiet — wakes people reliably, because the on/off transition is what the brain reacts to. Even a healthy sleeper has around 20 of these cortical arousals a night and remembers none of them. The intervention is an acoustic cushion: measure ambient sound, then play adaptive pink noise that gradually ramps up to round out the spikes, so onsets are smoothed rather than silenced. The same principle runs in reverse for enhancement — sounds played at exactly the level the brain responds to but doesn't wake to can entrain the delta waves of deep sleep.

Origin

Built into Gartenberg's Sonic Sleep software and validated in his lab, where hooking people up to EEG revealed that the disruptors were the innocuous transitions nobody complains about. He described the delta-wave entrainment extension in his TED talk.

How to run it

    Reframe the enemy as abruptness

    Stop auditing your room for loud things and start auditing it for things that switch on and off — HVAC, fridges, notifications, doors. These are what fragment sleep.

    Pro tip A plane cabin is loud and non-disruptive; an air conditioner is quiet and disruptive. Onset beats amplitude.

    Measure the ambient sound level

    Establish the baseline sound in the room so the masking layer can be set relative to it rather than at an arbitrary volume.

    Lay down a pink noise cushion

    Play adaptive pink noise as an acoustic cushion that rounds out any sounds that might occur during the night, rather than trying to eliminate them.

    Ramp gradually, never abruptly

    The masking noise must gradually ramp up to cover a detected sound. An abruptly-introduced mask is itself an abrupt onset and would cause the very arousal you're preventing.

    Watch out This is the whole reason a static white-noise machine underperforms an adaptive one.

    Optionally, entrain delta waves

    Beyond masking, sounds played at precisely the level the brain responds to but that don't wake you can entrain deep-sleep delta waves — increasing both the percentage of time in deep sleep and its intensity.

In the wild

The air conditioner in the EEG lab

Gartenberg hooked people up to electrodes to measure their sleep and saw something as innocuous as the air conditioning turning on wake people up — because of the abrupt on/off transition, not the volume. He contrasted this with a plane cabin: loud, like a low drum, but not disturbing to sleep.

The finding inverted the design brief from 'make the room quieter' to 'smooth the transitions' — and became the basis of Sonic Sleep's adaptive pink noise.

Delta wave entrainment study

Gartenberg's team played sounds during deep sleep at exactly the intensity the brain responds to but that doesn't wake the sleeper, targeting the delta waves that carry out synaptic down-regulation.

The study showed an increase in both the percentage of time spent in deep sleep and the intensity of that deep sleep, making sleep more regenerative without adding hours.

Common mistakes

Chasing silence

A perfectly silent room makes every unavoidable transient maximally abrupt relative to the baseline. A cushion of steady sound is better than silence punctuated by clicks.

Assuming you'd remember waking up

Healthy sleepers have up to 20 cortical arousals a night with absolutely no conscious awareness of them. 'I sleep through anything' is not evidence — your EEG disagrees.
