Biology-Before-Emotion Regulation

Dysregulated? It's always biology or emotion — fix the biology first, it's easier.

Asprey's regulation model reduces every dysregulated state — brain fog, crankiness, reactivity, anxiety — to one of two causes: stressed biology or stressed emotions. His rule is to fix the biology first because it is the easier lever, after which the emotional charge diminishes and can be addressed. He argues at least half, and often the vast majority, of anxiety is actually biological: a missing mineral or micronutrient, such as insufficient zinc that blocks testosterone production, manifests as the feeling of anxiety. Fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D paired with broad-spectrum minerals let the body drive nutrients into tissue, recover from stress, and stop generating the alarm signal.

Origin

Asprey developed this ordering from his own recovery from PTSD and obesity, discovering that stabilizing his biochemistry with vitamins and minerals dramatically reduced anxiety he had assumed was purely psychological.

Core principles

  • 01If you feel dysregulated, foggy, reactive, or cranky, the cause is always one of two things: biological stress or emotional stress.
  • 02Deal with the biology first because it is easy, and then the emotions feel less strong.
  • 03At least half — sometimes 80–90% — of anxiety is a biological deficiency, not the thoughts in your head.
  • 04Missing micronutrients and minerals (e.g. low zinc blocking testosterone) generate the feeling of anxiety.
  • 05Fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D drive minerals into tissues so the body can recover and build.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Diagnose the source

When you feel foggy, reactive, or anxious, recognize it must be either biological stress or emotional stress — it is always one of the two.

Pro tip Assume biology is a contributor even when the cause feels obviously emotional.

  2. 2

    Fix the biology first

Address the physical layer — sleep, hydration, food, and especially minerals and fat-soluble vitamins — because it is the easy lever and settles the body fast.

Pro tip Take vitamin D with broad-spectrum minerals so the vitamins drive the minerals into your tissues.

Watch out A deficiency like low zinc can block testosterone and directly produce the feeling of anxiety.

  3. 3

    Let the emotional charge drop

Once the biology is stabilized, notice that the emotional intensity is now weaker and easier to work with.

  4. 4

    Work the emotion

With the body calm, deal with the actual emotional trigger or repetitive thoughts, using techniques or neurofeedback as needed.

Pro tip A trusted team member or friend can flag reactivity you can't see in yourself.

In the wild

The zinc-testosterone anxiety loop

After exercise or stress the body tries to recover and make testosterone; if it lacks zinc it cannot, and the deficiency surfaces as anxiety the person wrongly attributes to their thoughts.

Supplying the missing mineral removes a large share of the anxiety at its biological root.

Diet as the top anxiety driver

Asprey states that diet is the number one contributor to anxiety, so even real emotional or relationship problems hit harder when the underlying biology is wrecked.

Repairing nutrition reduces how much genuine emotional stress overwhelms the person.

Common mistakes

Assuming anxiety is purely mental

Treating anxiety as only 'thoughts in your head' ignores that at least half of it is a fixable biological deficiency, so the easy lever goes unused.

Tackling emotions before biology

Working on the emotional trigger while the body is depleted is harder and less effective than settling the biology first.

Is it for you?

Best for

High-stress entrepreneurs who default to psychological explanations for anxiety and reactivity.

Not ideal for

People with clinical conditions who need professional medical or psychiatric care rather than self-management.
