Building Biology is an architecture-and-health discipline that treats a home or office as a system to be tuned for human flourishing across air, light, water, electricity and chemicals. Greenfield applies it by first analyzing the environment for hidden harms (mold, EMF, water contaminants), then remediating each domain to mimic the natural outdoor conditions humans evolved in. The goal is an indoor space that grounds you, delivers a natural light arc, clean air and water, and minimizes electromagnetic load. It reframes health optimization as an environmental design problem rather than a supplement problem.
Origin
Greenfield encountered the concept of building biology in architecture and wove its principles into his previous Washington home and his newly built Idaho permaculture home, spending roughly half a million dollars on equipment and design to make his living space compatible with human longevity.

Analyze before you optimize
Commission a mold/mycotoxin analysis (ERMI) and have a building biologist walk the home with meters to find where you're exposed to magnetic and electrical fields, especially in the bedroom and office.
Pro tip Google 'ERMI' plus your location to find a local mold specialist.
Watch out Kids' bedrooms are higher priority than adult rooms because children have thinner skulls and more rapidly dividing cells.

Ground your indoor surfaces
Restore contact with the earth's negative ions by grounding the floors of high-use rooms, so you get the same anti-inflammatory effect indoors as being barefoot outside.
Pro tip Greenfield lined every floor of his home with a copper conductive surface so a third-floor bedroom grounds you like standing barefoot outdoors; an earthing mat is a cheaper indoor alternative.

Simulate the natural light arc
Use circadian bulbs that produce red light at sunrise, full-spectrum light midday, and red light in the evening, so your indoor lighting mimics the outdoor sun even when you can't be outside.
Pro tip Sources include BlockBlueLight and BON CHARGE; some bulbs cycle sunrise/daytime/evening as you flip them off and on.
Watch out Overhead LED and fluorescent lighting produce EMF and an imperceptible flicker that keeps you in sympathetic (stress) mode.

Clean the air and water
Add air scrubbers, HEPA filtration and recirculation to approximate fresh outdoor air, and filter water to remove microplastics, metals and pharmaceutical residue.

Hardwire devices, disable smart-appliance Wi-Fi, use dirty-electricity filters, and keep electricity away from the headboard so the body can recharge during sleep.
Pro tip A USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter lets you keep a phone in airplane mode yet still work hardwired; turn the Wi-Fi router off at night.

After moving to a 12-acre Idaho permaculture farm, Greenfield built a home with copper-grounded floors, circadian bulbs in each room, triple-layer air treatment (scrubbers, filters, recirculation), whole-house reverse osmosis water, and CAT-8 shielded Ethernet so he can work without running Wi-Fi during the day.
