The Causal Arc Audit explains behaviour by moving backward through nested time scales. Begin with the neural activity behind the act, then inspect what happened seconds or minutes earlier: stress, fatigue, threat, comfort, hunger, or sensory cues. Move farther back through hormone exposure, recent trauma or change, adolescence, childhood, prenatal conditions, genes, culture, and ecology. Each layer changes how the next layer operates, so none is a standalone cause. The output is a causal account of how this particular person became likely to respond this way in this particular environment. The model challenges explanations that stop at conscious intent, which Sapolsky compares to reviewing a movie from its final three minutes.
Origin
Sapolsky developed the model across laboratory neurobiology, three decades of fieldwork with wild baboons, genetics, development, and cultural anthropology.

How to run it

Define the endpoint
State the observable behaviour and its consequences without turning it into a character label.
Pro tip Use a verb describing what happened rather than an adjective describing the person.
Watch out Starting with blame will bias every later explanation.

Inspect the immediate state
Look at the brain, body, setting, and stimuli in the seconds and minutes before the behaviour.
Pro tip Check hunger, pain, fatigue, temperature, threat, comfort, and sensory cues.

Expand the time horizon
Trace hormones, stress, trauma, relationships, and other experiences from earlier that day through prior months.
Watch out Do not treat a recent trigger as the sole cause.

Trace development and biology
Examine adolescence, childhood, prenatal conditions, and gene-environment interactions that shaped the response system.
Pro tip Ask how the same gene expression might differ under another environment.

Include learned norms, family patterns, ecology, and inherited cultural conditions.

In the wild
A manager rejects an applicant after a rushed late-afternoon interview. Instead of concluding that the manager is simply unfair, the audit checks time pressure, hunger, stress, assumptions about an outgroup, prior training, organisational incentives, and the manager's learned social categories. The review still protects the applicant by changing the process, but it targets the conditions that produced the judgment.
