The Counterfactual Control Test asks whether a choice would remain unchanged if the biology and environment behind the chooser were different. First identify the act being credited or condemned. Then vary the genes, hormones, prenatal environment, childhood, neighbourhood, education, culture, and immediate circumstances that shaped the relevant brain. If those changes would produce a different decision, the original act was not independent of its causes. Sapolsky uses this test to challenge both blame and meritocracy: the same logic applies to a person who cannot resist an addiction and to a founder praised for persistence. The practical output is calibrated judgment—retain safety measures and skill standards, but reduce moral condemnation, personal entitlement, and claims of having succeeded alone.

At his son's graduation, Sapolsky noticed a grounds worker bagging the families' lunch rubbish. He asks listeners to swap the two people's genes, childhoods, housing stability, neighbourhoods, lessons, and schools. Under the exchanged conditions, he argues, their positions on the stage and behind the rubbish bags would exchange too.
