The hypothesis states that because of technological trends, deep work is becoming increasingly rare while simultaneously becoming increasingly valuable — and therefore whoever cultivates it gains disproportionate leverage. Newport argues that nearly a decade after Deep Work, both halves have intensified. Email gave way to Slack, Slack to mobile computing, and browser-based social media to hyper-palatable algorithmic feeds like TikTok. Meanwhile AI can now automate precisely the low-level back-and-forth that fills most schedules, leaving hard concentration as the thing that keeps you in the game. The problems that motivated the book have only gotten worse; the one piece of good news is that the idea itself is now better known.

Newport formulated the hypothesis in Deep Work (2016), at a point roughly four years into ubiquitous smartphone use, before TikTok and algorithmically-driven hyper-palatable feeds existed. Revisiting it years later, he judged that fragmentation had worsened dramatically while AI raised the ceiling on the value of depth.

In the wild
When Newport wrote Deep Work, people used a lot of social media but were only about four years into ubiquitous smartphone use, and much of it was accessed via browsers. There was no TikTok, no hyper-palatable algorithmically driven feed.
