Describe, Don't Label is Dr. Leaf's method for handling emotional struggle without collapsing your identity into a diagnosis. She argues a label is fine as information but harmful when you make it who you are, because the mind fuses you to it and takes away hope. Instead, treat the emotion as a signal — data — and describe it across four categories: the emotions, the bodily sensations, the behaviors, and the perspective. Those signals trace back to a thought made of memories, which is the root cause. You can't change what happened, but you can deconstruct down to the root and reconstruct how you want the story to play out.
Origin
Grew out of Dr. Leaf's clinical work with trauma and neurological patients and her QEEG research showing identity fusion with labels produces measurable drops in frontal-brain energy and changes down to hormones and telomeres.
Core principles
- 01A label becomes harmful when you tie it to your identity, because your powerful mind then fuses you to it.
- 02Emotions are not symptoms but signals — data pointing to an underlying thought and root cause.
- 03Describing across four signal categories (emotions, bodily sensations, behaviors, perspective) restores hope and agency.
- 04You can't change what happened, but you can change the story inside the network and how it plays out.
How to run it
- 1
Flip the label into a description
Replace 'I am depression / anxiety / ADHD' with 'I'm showing up with depression because of...' so the condition is something you're experiencing, not your identity.
Watch out A label ties to identity and takes hope away; that fusion is what keeps people stuck.
- 2
Describe the four signal categories
Lay out the emotions ('flat, want to give up'), the bodily sensations ('lethargy, gut ache'), the behaviors ('withdrawing, not getting out of bed'), and the perspective ('my life sucks').
Pro tip Every emotion has a sensory input, so always ask where you feel it in your body.
- 3
Trace the signals to the thought
Follow the signals down to the thought driving them. A thought is a collection of memories (anywhere from 50 to 5 million) from real experiences — abuse, financial strain, a struggling child.
Pro tip Signals are data, and data leads you to the thought, which is the narrative root cause.
- 4
Deconstruct to the root and reconstruct the story
Once you reach the root you have power: acknowledge you can't change what happened, then decide how you want it to play out and rewrite the narrative.
Pro tip This is the Neurocycle in action — it won't finish in a day or 63 seconds; the rewiring happens over 63 days.
Watch out Don't use 'not labeling' to invalidate real, extreme depression or anxiety that needs help — describing is about hope, not denial.
In the wild
Dr. Leaf imagines ten clinically depressed people in front of her. Stamping each with 'you have clinical depression' plus medication changes their identity to 'I am depression' and offers relief that is an empty gift. In reality each has a thousand stories and a whole epigenetic and environmental network that led them there.
→ Reducing all of that to one label does them a disservice; describing the signals and tracing the root gives each person a path and hope.
Common mistakes
Fusing identity to a diagnosis
Saying 'I am depression / bipolar / anxiety' changes your identity and, per Leaf's QEEG work, drops frontal-brain energy and alters hormones down to telomeres.
Treating emotions as symptoms to suppress instead of signals to read
Symptoms invite a label and a box; signals are data that lead you to the root thought you can actually work with.
Is it for you?
Best for
Anyone tempted to self-diagnose or who has been handed a label like depression, anxiety, or ADHD and feels boxed in.
Not ideal for
Situations of genuine biological brain damage or extreme clinical crisis where professional intervention is needed first.
