Casale's model for Speshies pairs two utility types. IRL utility: a real event in New York on March 19th where you only get in by showing your Speshie at the door — an exclusive red-carpet, open-bar screening of an animated short film he's never released. Digital utility: for the first Ur Special apparel drop, unique exclusive items were purchasable only if you verified you were a Speshie holder. The dynamism between the two dynamics is what he believes provides maximum value to the holder. Critically, he frames this as a permanent obligation — you want to keep fulfilling it for life, because the ask is that people hold forever.
Origin
The concept crystallised for Casale when he heard what Bored Ape Yacht Club did at NFT NYC — a yacht party where your Ape was your proof of entry, headlined by Chris Rock and Aziz Ansari with The Strokes playing live. He describes that as 'a cultural fork in the road' where the question became whether these things could actually bring IRL utility. His reaction was: okay, that's a start to the conversation — what else?
Core principles
- 01IRL utility and digital utility working together produce maximum holder value.
- 02The creator's obligation to the holder never ends — you're fulfilling it for life.
- 03Exclusive items act as social signals: holders recognise each other in the wild.
- 04Token-as-ticket converts an asset into an experience.
- 05The goal is that people want to hold forever, not that they're locked in.
How to run it
- 1
Make the token the ticket
Design a real-life experience where holding is the only way in. Show the asset at the door.
Pro tip Bundle something you've never released publicly — Casale's event premiered an unreleased animated short.
- 2
Gate a digital exclusive too
Ship something purely online that only verified holders can access or buy. IRL alone excludes the majority of your community geographically.
Pro tip Casale gated exclusive apparel items behind holder verification on his first Ur Special drop.
- 3
Make the exclusive visible
Design holder-only items so that wearing one identifies you to other holders in public. The recognition moment is the community.
Pro tip 'If you see someone else wearing it you're like oh they're a holder too.'
- 4
Ask the retention question continuously
As the creator, keep asking: how do I continue to have you stoked about being here?
Watch out This is a permanent job. Casale says you want to keep fulfilling it 'for life really' — plan capacity accordingly or don't start.
In the wild
Casale's first IRL event, March 19th in New York: entry only by showing your Speshie at the door. Exclusive screening, open bar, red carpet, and the first-ever public showing of an animated short film he'd never released.
→ The event turned the NFT from a static image into a membership credential and gave holders a reason to hold through a bear market.
For the first Ur Special clothing drop, Casale included unique exclusive items in the collection that you could only buy if you verified you were a Speshie holder.
→ The items work as a public signal — a holder wearing one is identifiable to other holders, which converts an asset class into a visible community.
Common mistakes
Treating utility as a launch campaign
Fulfilment that stops after mint tells holders the relationship was transactional. Casale frames it as a lifetime obligation because the ask — hold forever — is a lifetime ask.
IRL-only utility
Gating everything on physical events excludes most of a global holder base. Without a parallel digital track, the majority of holders receive nothing and churn out.
Is it for you?
Best for
Creators and founders running token-gated communities, membership products, or collectible projects with an existing audience.
Not ideal for
Purely financial instruments, or anyone without the capacity to keep shipping experiences indefinitely.
