Emotional Optimization Meditation is Elrod's result-oriented alternative to traditional mind-clearing meditation. Instead of focusing on the breath, you look at your schedule, ask what mental or emotional state would best serve you today, then use memories, imagery, and affirmations to generate that state and marinate in it. His default state is 'bliss' — love, contentment, gratitude, and peace — but for a keynote he'd deliberately cultivate confidence. The claim is that repeatedly meditating in a chosen state hardwires new neural pathways so those states become defaults you can access at will, eventually without any props.

Origin

Elrod, a self-described result-oriented person, found standard performance meditation (clearing the mind, focusing on breath) unsatisfying, so he invented his own variant. He named it Emotional Optimization Meditation and teaches it in the updated edition of The Miracle Morning.

Core principles

  • 01Most meditation clears the mind; this deliberately cultivates a chosen emotional state.
  • 02Pick the optimal state for what the day actually requires.
  • 03Repeatedly meditating in a state hardwires it as an accessible default.
  • 04You can summon memories, imagery, and affirmations to generate the target state.

How to run it

  1. 1

Review the day and choose a target state

Glance at your agenda and ask: what is the optimal mental or emotional state that would best serve me today given what I'm doing? Default to bliss on a general day; pick something specific like confidence when the day demands it.

Pro tip Elrod defines bliss as four components: love, contentment, gratitude, and peace.

  2. 2

Generate the state with memory and imagery

Recall the last time you felt the target state (e.g. confident in front of an audience), and use visualization and affirmations to bring that feeling into the present.

Pro tip Layer the other SAVERS — visualize the scene and affirm 'I am a phenomenal speaker' to deepen the state.

  3. 3

    Marinate and hardwire it

Optionally place a hand on your heart, set a timer for 5-20 minutes, and sit in the state — meditating or 'marinating' in it to create new neural pathways.

Pro tip After enough repetition you can drop the props and sink into the state instantly, hand on heart, eyes closed.

In the wild

Cultivating confidence before a keynote

Before speaking to a large audience, Elrod recalls the last time he felt genuinely confident on stage — a recent Leadercast talk — reconnects to how that felt, and reinforces it with visualization and the affirmation that he'll make a phenomenal impact.

He enters the target state deliberately rather than hoping to feel confident, and over time can access confidence or bliss at will without any memory prompt.

Common mistakes

Waiting for the right state to arrive

Leaving your emotional state to chance means you perform in whatever mood you woke up in; the practice is about deliberately choosing and generating the state instead.

Is it for you?

Best for

Result-oriented people and performers who want to summon states like confidence or calm on demand.

Not ideal for

Practitioners committed to traditional mind-clearing or breath-focused meditation who don't want a goal-directed variant.
