Brecka uses a tree metaphor to trace the most common complaint — 'I just lack energy' — down to its root. Energy is really oxygen, carried by red blood cells and hemoglobin, produced in the bone marrow. The bone marrow's 'boss' is testosterone, whose primary role in both sexes is pressuring marrow to make red blood cells. Testosterone is made from DHEA, which is made from vitamin D3. So rather than starting at the leaves with hormones, you go to the roots: optimize D3 and DHEA first, because about 70% of hormone-deficient clients need the raw material to build hormones, not the hormones themselves.

Origin

Brecka developed this walk-down-the-tree diagnostic from clinical work at 10X Health, where the number-one complaint is loss of energy, mapping the physiological chain from perceived energy back to vitamin D3 as the deepest root.

Core principles

  • 01What we perceive as energy is really oxygen in the blood.
  • 02Symptoms are the leaves; the fix lives in the roots.
  • 03Testosterone's primary role in men and women is pressuring bone marrow to make red blood cells (erythropoiesis).
  • 04Most hormone-deficient clients need the raw material to make hormones, not the hormones themselves.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Translate the symptom into physiology

Reframe 'I lack energy' as 'I'm low on oxygen,' since perceived energy is oxygen carried in the blood.

  2. 2

Walk down the tree to the root

Follow the chain from red blood cells and hemoglobin, to the bone marrow that makes them, to testosterone that pressures the marrow, to DHEA, to vitamin D3 at the root.

Pro tip Testosterone's primary role in men and women is erythropoiesis, not male characteristics.

  3. 3

    Fix the raw material first

Test and optimize D3 and DHEA into range before reaching for hormone replacement, letting the body build testosterone naturally.

Watch out Roughly 70% of hormone-deficient clients don't need hormones — they need the raw material to make them.

In the wild

Low energy traced to D3

A client complaining of low waking energy and poor recall is, in physiological terms, low on oxygen. Brecka traces it down: low oxygen ← low red blood cells ← low testosterone ← low DHEA ← low vitamin D3. Correcting D3 and DHEA raises testosterone, marrow pressure, red blood cells, and oxygen.

Energy and oxidative state improve without starting exogenous hormones.

Common mistakes

Starting at the leaves with hormones

Jumping straight to testosterone ignores the upstream DHEA and D3 deficiencies that are the real cause for most people.

Treating fatigue as separate from oxygen

Chasing energy with stimulants misses that perceived energy is oxygen delivery, which depends on red blood cell production.

Is it for you?

Best for

People with fatigue, low libido, or suspected hormone imbalance who want to fix the cause rather than mask it.

Not ideal for

Those who want to start exogenous hormones immediately without testing upstream raw materials.
