When someone declares a result impossible, do not begin from the industry's existing solution. State the claimed limitation and ask whether changing it would violate a genuine law of physics or another appropriate base truth. For physical products, inspect materials, pressure, tolerances, and other irreducible properties. For sales or information products, inspect durable truths about human psychology rather than competitors' tactics. Separate those fundamentals from markups, equipment choices, conventions, and frames inherited from prior systems. Then build upward again, designing an approach that respects the real constraints without preserving the artificial ones. This method creates innovation by changing the question from how others currently do it to what reality itself permits.

Standard machines assumed products would contain high-fructose corn syrup, so manufacturers said Quest's formulation could not run. The team decomposed the bar into pressure, viscosity, and stickiness requirements, then engineered equipment with tolerances suited to the actual product.
