Storey argues the miracle mentality is innate — little kids expect to be a princess or a superhero, they have imaginary friends, and no child ever plays with a 'loser man' toy. Adults lose it, but it can be regrown. The upgrade is from believing in miracles to expecting them, and the fuel is a daily discipline: Storey studies two hours a day, seven days a week, to renew his mind because he does not wake up positive by default. Crucially, most miracles are ordinary-looking — a connection that compounds, like meeting Oprah 17 years ago. The mindset is yours to set, so you set it deliberately each day rather than inheriting it from how your shoulder feels.

Origin

Storey grew up in Compton, youngest of five, seven people in a two-bedroom apartment, his mother a Winchell's Donuts worker with a sixth-grade education and his father at Bethlehem Steel. He watched Walt Disney movies on Sunday nights at five and six years old and called himself the king — 'thinking big in small places'. His mother's line, 'we might be lower income, but we're not lower class', set the standard the mentality grew from.

Core principles

  • 01The miracle mentality is innate — every child has it, most adults lose it.
  • 02Believing in miracles is passive; expecting them is a posture that changes behaviour.
  • 03The mindset is yours to set — it does not arrive pre-set each morning.
  • 04Miracles are frequently just connections, not spectacles.
  • 05Renewing the mind is a daily discipline, not a mood.

How to run it

  1. 1

Accept that the mentality is innate, not earned

You already had it as a child. Little girls want to be a queen; little boys pick Spider-Man, never 'loser man'. The work is recovery, not acquisition.

  2. 2

    Upgrade from believing to expecting

Belief is passive assent. Expectation changes what you look for, what you say yes to, and how you read a chance meeting. Storey says he learned to make this shift very early in life.

  3. 3

Renew your mind on a schedule

Storey studies two hours every morning, seven days a week. He is explicit that he does not wake up feeling amazing — the discipline is what makes him hard to yank down.

Pro tip Study what you don't know and what you want to master — those are the only two categories worth your morning.

Watch out Skipping this makes your mindset a function of your mood, which is exactly the failure mode.

  4. 4

    Recount connections as miracles

Widen your definition. Storey calls his connection with his host a miracle, and traces the Oprah relationship — which opened doors for 17 years — back to a single introduction.

  5. 5

Refuse to get dramatic in the drama

When the setback arrives, look at it and figure it out rather than escalating. Storey's phrase: a fire could start right here and I won't get dramatic in the drama.

In the wild

Served with a lawsuit mid-keynote

Speaking at a large convention, a man in a suit walked up mid-talk with a folder and announced 'you've been served' in front of the whole crowd, over something Storey says he did not do. Storey thanked him publicly, asked the audience to applaud him for doing his job, said it took guts, and then invited him to stay for the last 20 minutes because he might learn something.

The talk continued without the room turning. Storey uses it as his proof case for 'your mindset is yours to set' under maximum public pressure.

Meeting Oprah

Gayle King tried to connect Storey with Oprah, then Quincy Jones tried. He had no way of knowing where the introduction would go. Oprah later told him she would open up doors for him just because she loved him — and did.

Seventeen years of documentaries, tours and repeat collaboration from one connection — his standing example that miracles are often just connections.

Common mistakes

Waiting to feel positive

Storey says plainly he does not wake up positive. Treating the mindset as a feeling rather than a setting means you only have it on good days.

Only counting spectacular miracles

If the bar is magic, you'll walk past the connection that would have compounded for 17 years.

Getting dramatic in the drama

Escalating with the chaos hands your mindset to the event. Look, assess, figure it out.

Is it for you?

Best for

People whose circumstances are difficult but whose imagination has gone quiet, and entrepreneurs on the roller coaster who need a stable default state.

Not ideal for

People who need concrete tactical planning right now, or anyone who would use 'expecting miracles' as a substitute for weighing the facts.

I believe that the miracle mentality is innate, but it can grow. You have to go from believing in miracles to expecting miracles.
