The PIE Principle builds a community through three connected elements: Purpose, Influence, and Experiences. Purpose declares why the organization or movement exists and gives people a shared direction. Influence makes that purpose visible through credible positions, cultural voices, and actions that can carry the message. Experiences give members something meaningful to do together, converting awareness into participation and memory. The leader audits all three as one system: a purpose without influence remains obscure, influence without purpose becomes attention seeking, and both without experiences leave people outside the journey. When the elements align, members do more than hear brand claims; they gather around the idea, enact it, and help spread it. Salau describes the resulting community strength as the brand's larger “pie” in the marketplace.

Origin

Tim Salau developed the PIE Principle from his community-building work and illustrates it through Apple product launches and the Biden-Harris campaign.

Core principles

  • 01Purpose gives a community a reason to gather
  • 02Influence carries the purpose through trusted voices and positions
  • 03Experiences turn spectators into participants
  • 04All three elements reinforce one another

How to run it

  1. 1

    Declare the purpose

State why the brand or movement exists and what shared future it asks people to support.

Pro tip Use language members can repeat and apply to decisions.

Watch out A generic mission will not create meaningful alignment.

  2. 2

    Activate influence

Express the purpose through credible stances, products, leaders, and cultural voices that reach the intended community.

Pro tip Choose messengers whose behavior already fits the purpose.

Watch out Borrowed reach without alignment weakens trust.

  3. 3

    Create participation

Design events, rituals, campaigns, or product moments that members can experience together.

Pro tip Give members an active role rather than another message to consume.

  4. 4

    Connect the three elements

Verify that each experience demonstrates the purpose and that each influential voice directs people toward genuine participation.

Pro tip Tell one coherent story across every element.

Watch out Disconnected tactics create attention without community.

  5. 5

    Observe community behavior

Look for members gathering, contributing, sharing, and identifying with the purpose, then improve the weakest PIE element.

Watch out Follower counts alone do not prove participation.

In the wild

Apple turns a launch into a community event

Salau maps Apple to PIE: a purpose centered on quality tools for creators, influence expressed through privacy positions, and experiences such as customers waiting together for a new iPhone launch. The queue becomes a ritual where fans meet, celebrate, and visibly participate in the brand.

Product attention becomes a shared experience that reinforces trust and community identity.

A campaign rallies a movement

Salau describes the Biden-Harris campaign using a purpose about reclaiming the soul of a nation, influential cultural figures to spread it, and campaign events and rallies that let supporters participate.

A political message becomes an organized movement with reach, donations, and participation.

Common mistakes

Stopping at purpose statements

A declared purpose does not create community unless credible influence and participation make it tangible.

Broadcasting without involving people

Repeated promotion leaves the audience outside the journey and produces spectators rather than members.

Using misaligned influencers

Reach from voices that do not embody the purpose makes the movement feel manufactured.

Is it for you?

Best for

It is best for brands, campaigns, and movements seeking durable participation rather than promotional reach alone.

Not ideal for

It is not ideal for transactional offers that have no credible shared purpose or room for participation.
