The press hit is worth 20% — what you do with it is the other 80%.

The 80/20 PR Amplification Rule reframes what a media hit is for. Gottlieb argues only 20% of a hit's value is the piece of content itself — most people never finish the article, podcast, or book. The other 80% is what you do with it: photos, clips, reels, website badges, email-signature mentions, and repurposed transcripts. The right question isn't 'how many people will watch this?' but 'how am I going to amplify the crap out of it?' Done well, a single segment becomes a year of content, and this logic makes even paid media worthwhile when planned around amplification.

Origin

Gottlieb formed this rule through running a successful PR agency representing major personal brands, seeing that clients who systematically amplified hits far outperformed those who treated the hit as the endpoint.

Core principles

  • 01Most people never fully read the article or finish the podcast — reach is not where the value lives.
  • 0280% of a media hit's value is in how you repurpose and amplify it.
  • 03Earned media beats paid, but strategic paid works if you plan to amplify it.
  • 04One segment can become a year's worth of content.

How to run it

  1. 1

Reframe the goal of the hit

Stop measuring a PR opportunity by how many people will watch or read it live. Accept that only ~20% of the value is the content itself and that most people won't consume it fully.

  2. 2

    Ask the amplification question

Before and after any hit, ask 'how am I going to amplify this to showcase my credibility?' — plan the photos, clips, and assets you'll capture on the day.

Pro tip Line up your capture plan before the appearance so you don't lose reusable assets.

  3. 3

    Repurpose across every surface

Turn one segment into many pieces: reels, posts, tweets and threads (using AI on the transcript), a website credibility badge, an email-signature line, an email-sequence mention, and sales-conversation follow-ups.

Pro tip Feed the full interview transcript to AI to spin out a year's worth of posts, tweets, and threads from a single segment.

  4. 4

    Choose earned first, paid strategically

Default to earned media because it's organic and elevates your brand most. Consider paid placements only when you're prepared to amplify them into credibility, and be aware some paid media reads as obviously paid and can cheapen a brand.

Watch out Some paid media is visibly paid and can make your brand look weak; only pursue it with a real amplification plan.

In the wild

One segment, a year of content

Gottlieb describes taking a single show segment or brand photo and turning it into emails, website content, many reels, an entire podcast, and countless AI-repurposed posts, tweets, and threads from the transcript.

A lone appearance becomes roughly a year's worth of content, making the hit valuable regardless of its live audience size.

Common mistakes

Judging PR by live reach

Deciding whether to do a hit based on how many people will watch misses that ~80% of value comes from repurposing, not the original audience.

Treating the hit as the finish line

Doing the interview and never amplifying it leaves the bulk of its value — the content and credibility assets — completely unused.

Is it for you?

Best for

Personal brands and businesses that land media hits and want to maximize their credibility and content ROI.

Not ideal for

Those chasing direct-response lead generation who expect a single hit to drive immediate sales.
