REV is Bayer's triage for change: are you reinventing, evolving, or pivoting? Reinvention is for an area that is simply not working and has to start fresh — the end result looks completely different from where it began, and it often applies to health or a social circle. Evolving is for something that's fine and is going to change naturally, as anything in life does. Pivoting is when you want to stay in the thing but need a different direction that serves you better. The value of the acronym is sizing: Bayer's observation is that people routinely act as though they need a giant reinvention when the actual undertaking isn't that difficult and isn't nearly as big a deal as they're making it.

Origin

REV is one of a family of acronyms Bayer built for his books and coaching practice — alongside GOD and FORCE — designed to give people a fast, memorable diagnostic rather than fluffy advice. He developed it from repeatedly watching clients treat modest course corrections as total life overhauls, and needing a way to name the difference in one word.

Core principles

  • 01Every area of life needing change needs one of three different-sized makeovers, not one generic one.
  • 02Reinvention means starting fresh — the end state looks nothing like the start.
  • 03Evolving means the thing is fine and will change naturally, like anything else in life.
  • 04Pivoting means staying in it but taking a different direction that suits you better.
  • 05Most people misdiagnose small changes as giant reinventions and stall on the imagined scale.

How to run it

  1. 1

Name the area of life in question

Pick the specific domain you want to change — health, social life, friendships, career — rather than 'my life'.

  2. 2

    Test for reinvention

Ask whether this area simply is not working. Reinvention means starting fresh, where the end result looks completely different than when it first started.

Pro tip Bayer points to health and social life as the domains most often genuinely needing reinvention.

  3. 3

    Test for evolution

Ask whether the area is actually fine and is simply going to evolve, just like anything else in life. If so, no intervention is required.

  4. 4

    Test for pivot

Ask whether you want to stay in this but take a different direction that would be better for you. That's a pivot, not a rebuild.

  5. 5

Size the undertaking to the diagnosis

Match the effort to the makeover the area actually needs. Sometimes the undertaking is not that difficult and you're acting like you need a giant reinvention when it's literally not as big a deal as you're making it.

Watch out Over-diagnosing as reinvention is the common failure — it manufactures a scale of change large enough to justify never starting.

In the wild

Reinventing a college friendship circle

Bayer put the REV lens on Hala's own story — after a college period of heavy partying and drug use, the friendships in her life weren't something to evolve or pivot; the area wasn't working and had to start fresh.

He identified it as a reinvention: a set of relationships that ends up looking completely different than when it first started.

Common mistakes

Defaulting everything to reinvention

Sometimes the undertaking is not that difficult and we're acting like we need to go through a giant reinvention when it's literally not as big a deal as we're making it. The inflated diagnosis becomes the excuse.

Intervening in something that's simply evolving

Some areas are fine and are going to evolve on their own, like anything else in life. Forcing a makeover on them wastes effort that the genuinely broken area needs.

Is it for you?

Best for

Anyone facing a change in health, career, relationships or social life and unsure how radical the response needs to be.

Not ideal for

Situations where the diagnosis is already obvious and the bottleneck is execution rather than framing.
