Roots and Fruits is Trucks' measuring tool and the entry point to the Shift Method. It consists of ten separate sections of who you are that together form the tree of life that is you — covering health (physical and mental), wealth, relationships, friends, family and where you place your energy. He frames it via GPS: to chart a path you need two locations, and while everyone can name the destination, almost nobody has established where they are actually starting from. Anchoring these ten sections gives clarity on where improvement is needed, and because it produces a numeric base it is re-checked periodically so you can see yourself making the shift rather than just hoping.
Origin
Trucks built Roots and Fruits as the measurement layer inside the Shift Method, describing it as a sub-framework beneath the main See/Shift/Sustain structure, because clients came in with visions and dreams but no honest read on their starting position.
Core principles
- 01A GPS needs two locations: where you are and where you are going.
- 02Most people only ever specify the destination.
- 03Identity shows up across health, wealth and relationships — all need mapping.
- 04A numeric baseline makes an intangible shift observable.
- 05Re-measure periodically, not just once.
How to run it
- 1
Map the ten sections
Work through the ten separate sections that make up the tree of life that is you, spanning health, wealth, relationships, friends, family and energy placement.
Watch out Skipping the areas you feel worst about defeats the purpose — those are usually the roots.
- 2
Anchor them numerically
Score each section to produce a tangible numeric baseline of where you are right now.
Pro tip This is your GPS start pin. Without it, the route is guesswork.
- 3
Read where improvement is needed
Use the anchored picture to identify which areas of your actual life experience need work, and feed those into the Shift plan.
- 4
Re-check periodically
Return to the scores throughout the process so you have observable evidence of the shift rather than a feeling.
In the wild
Asked whether a bad environment can be overridden, Trucks points straight back to Roots and Fruits: one of the ten sections is explicitly friends, family and where you place your energy. Because humans are designed for connection — from handshakes to vocal cords — you cannot do the work in a bubble and then pop out to show the world.
→ Environment gets treated as a measurable root of the tree rather than an excuse or an afterthought.
Common mistakes
Charting the route with only a destination
A GPS needs two locations. Naming where you want to go without establishing where you are makes the path meaningless.
Measuring once and never again
The tool is periodic. A single baseline tells you where you started but never whether the shift is real.
Is it for you?
Best for
Anyone starting a change programme who wants a tangible, numeric read on whether the shift is real.
Not ideal for
People who want an immediate tactical fix; this is a measuring instrument, not an intervention.
From the transcript
“we do something called roots and fruits that's uh it's ten separate sections of who you are that create the tree of life that is…”
“gps needs two destination or two different locations where i'm at where i'm going so we do something called roots and fruits”
“that's more of our measuring tool we start with that get a clear picture where you're at and we periodically are checking that throughout”
