Situational status is Miner's concept, drawn from social dynamics, that even if you rank below a prospect in global status markers (followers, wealth, fame), you can make them view you as higher status within the specific situation you're discussing. You achieve it with better questions that trigger curiosity, tonality that lowers their guard, and detached expert statements. It matters because people buy from whoever they trust can get them the best result — status, not likeability, drives the purchase.
Origin
Miner studied social dynamics — how status and rank are assigned in society — in his behavioral science degree, noting status markers differ across eras (Polynesian tribal tattoos vs. modern followers/wealth/fame), and built situational status as the lever a lower-ranked seller can pull.
Core principles
- 01Society ranks status by followers, wealth, and fame — but status can be earned situationally.
- 02Better questions that trigger curiosity make the prospect view you as higher status internally.
- 03Detached, expert-like statements raise status; needy statements lower it.
- 04People buy from those they trust can get the best result, not those they merely like.
How to run it
- 1
Understand global status markers
Recognize that society ranks people by social media followers, wealth, and fame — and that a prospect with a $500M net worth won't view you as higher status financially.
- 2
Trigger curiosity with better questions
Ask advanced questions that trigger curiosity and get the prospect to internally view you differently, regardless of your net worth.
- 3
Use tonality and detachment
Use tonality to get them to let their guard down and make detached, expert-like statements ('we might find you're better off staying with who you have') that only an expert would say.
Pro tip Needy salespeople say 'I know you're going to like this'; experts stay detached.
Watch out Getting too assumptive too early makes A-type owners push back and lowers your status.
In the wild
A financial advisor making $300-400K talks to a prospect worth $500M. They can't out-rank them financially, so they use curiosity-triggering questions and tonality to earn situational status on the specific topic.
→ In that situation the prospect views the advisor as higher status and opens up, despite the wealth gap.
Common mistakes
Being needy to win the deal
Statements like 'I know you're going to love this' mark you as a needy amateur and lower your status, making prospects guard themselves.
Is it for you?
Best for
Sellers talking to prospects who outrank them in wealth, fame, or following.
Not ideal for
Contexts where authentic peer rapport, not status elevation, is the goal.
From the transcript
“that is called situational status where in that situation they view you at a much higher status than themselves with what you're focused and talking…”
“people buy from people they trust can get the best result period if they like you that's just a bonus”
