Delony distills two decades of crisis work and neuroscience into six daily choices that build what he calls a non-anxious life: reality, connection, freedom, health, mindfulness, and belief. The premise is that anxiety is an alarm system reacting to a genuinely unsafe life, so the fix is to make the underlying life safe across these six domains rather than to silence the alarm. Each choice targets a specific driver of the body's threat response: isolation, debt, poor health, reactivity, and lack of meaning. The choices are practiced daily and compound over months and years. It reframes wellness from a mental exercise into concrete action across relationships, finances, body, and spirit.
Origin
Delony built the framework after his own 2010 burnout, when his body began shutting down and his young daughter recoiled from him because she sensed a 'nuclear reactor' in his chest. Distilling the neuroscience and his coaching experience, he asked what six places he would start to rebuild, producing the six choices later expanded in his book.
Core principles
- 01Anxiety is a downstream symptom of an unsafe life, not a standalone disease to medicate away.
- 02Mental health is action, not getting the right thoughts in the right order.
- 03You reduce chronic anxiety by changing the conditions your body is reacting to, across six domains.
- 04The six choices are daily and cumulative, not one-time fixes.
How to run it
- 1
Choose reality
Stop avoiding the true state of your finances, relationships, and body. Pull out a yellow pad and honestly write down who you owe, the state of your romantic relationships, and who would show up at 2am.
Pro tip Use a paper yellow pad, not a spreadsheet, so it stays a human inventory rather than an optimization exercise.
- 2
Choose connection
Build real in-person relationships. Secure two to five people who truly know you and would show up, because digital threads and Zoom masterminds are information transfer, not connection.
Watch out If you have no one to call at 2am, your body will keep sounding every alarm it has.
- 3
Choose freedom
Ask who owns you. Reduce debt, clutter, and competing voices so you, not a bank or investor, decide what you do tomorrow.
Watch out If you owe someone money, especially a bank or investor, they decide your tomorrow, not you.
- 4
Choose health
Treat your body at least as well as your car: protect sleep, move, get sunlight, and go see a professional about what isn't working even when the appointment is awkward.
Pro tip The new courage is booking the awkward health appointment instead of ignoring the symptom.
- 5
Choose mindfulness
Practice widening the gap between stimulus and response. When something happens, exhale first and then decide what to do, rather than reacting instantly.
Pro tip Lead with your breath: exhale before you speak or act.
- 6
Choose belief
Take a knee daily to something bigger than yourself and ask for help, because the self cannot carry the weight of the cosmos alone.
Watch out If you never submit voluntarily, you'll eventually submit involuntarily in a hospital, a divorce court, or an AA group.
In the wild
Delony paid off a mortgage at a 2.7% rate even though critics said he could have earned 5% in a high-yield savings account. He chose the peace of knowing no one could take his house over the mathematically optimal return.
→ He reports walking into negotiations able to smile and walk away because he has no house payment, which he says changed every fiber of his being.
Common mistakes
Treating anxiety as only a thought problem
Believing mental health is getting the right thoughts in the right order ignores that your physical environment, relationships, and finances drive the body's alarm; you have to take action, not just think differently.
Silencing the alarm instead of fixing the fire
Medicating or numbing anxiety without changing the unsafe conditions is like taking the batteries out of a smoke detector while the house burns.
Is it for you?
Best for
Ambitious entrepreneurs and professionals who feel constantly anxious despite outward success.
Not ideal for
People with major depressive disorder or acute clinical conditions who need medical treatment first, not a lifestyle checklist alone.
From the transcript
“If I could distill this all down to make it very simple, what are the six places I would start to build a non-anxious life.”
“The mental health community has failed dramatically telling people that mental and emotional health is getting all the right thoughts in the right order. That's…”
