Gartenberg's recommendation to any student is blunt: almost always sleep rather than cram. The reasoning is two-sided. On the input side, a large body of research shows people perform better on memory and procedural tasks when they sleep, compared with not sleeping and practising a lot — because REM takes the day's relevant material and integrates it into long-term memory. On the output side, executive functioning is completely impaired when you're sleep-deprived, so you won't perform well on the test or the presentation regardless of what you crammed. His analogy is a muscle: push it too hard and it gives out. There's an ideal ratio of processing to sleep, and the all-nighter sits far past it on both counts.

How to run it

Do the study session first
Load the material during the day. The sleep only consolidates what you actually processed — you can't sleep your way to knowledge you never encountered.

Set the cutoff at your normal bedtime
Stop studying in time to sleep your normal amount. The decision point is the moment you're tempted to trade sleep for another hour of review — take the sleep.

Sleep the full amount
Let the night run. REM replays and integrates the day's relevant information into long-term memory; deep sleep down-regulates the noise so what matters rises to the top.
Pro tip Things done with intention and that are important to you are preferentially replayed — study with intent, and the replay targets it.

Show up with executive function intact
The test or presentation demands live executive functioning, which is completely impaired by deprivation. Arriving rested protects the performance half, not just the recall half.
Watch out Sleep deprivation also guts creativity, divergent thinking and even your sense of humour — everything a presentation actually needs.

Distribute across nights
Since sleep is doing the consolidation, more nights beats more hours. Spread the study across several days so there are multiple consolidation cycles rather than one compressed push.
In the wild
Asked to elaborate, Gartenberg said that for any high schoolers or college students listening he would almost always recommend sleeping before cramming — to consolidate the information — and pointed out that executive functioning is completely impaired when sleep-deprived, so you won't perform better on the test or presentation having crammed for it.

Common mistakes
Treating study time as the only input
Hours-with-the-material is only half the equation. The sleep afterwards is the process that installs it, so cutting sleep to add study hours removes the mechanism you were feeding.
Pushing the cognitive muscle past failure
Gartenberg's muscle analogy: push too hard and it gives out with a negative performance outcome. There's an ideal amount of processing versus sleep, and more processing past that point actively costs you.
