The Stage-Based Thermal Sleep Protocol starts from the observation that body temperature and sleep stages change over the course of a night. It therefore rejects the idea that one fixed room temperature, such as 68 degrees, is optimal for every hour. During the earlier deep-sleep period, a colder environment can support physical recovery and deeper sleep. During REM, the target shifts to thermal neutrality: neither hot nor cold, because normal body-temperature control is reduced in that stage. The pattern must also be personalized because age, gender, metabolism, menopause, and individual preference affect comfort. The practical mechanism is dynamic rather than static: cool early, move toward neutral later, monitor the sleeper's response, and tune the curve over repeated nights.
