The STD Story is Brock Johnson's named formula for engineering maximum-view Instagram stories on demand. It has three parts: Single (only one story in the 24-hour window), Text-heavy (multiple sentences of text so viewers pause to read), and DM automation (a reply-with-a-keyword prompt). The text forces viewers to hold their finger down, which can double the watch time Instagram records versus a tapped-through story. The DM automation is the most important part because it turns passive viewers into active messagers and captured leads. It is a strategic tool for launches, not a daily habit.

Origin

Brock built the formula from analyzing his own analytics — noting that his top-viewed stories were plain-background text slides, and that roughly 35 of his top 36 stories all used some form of DM automation. He named it STD deliberately so people never forget it.

Core principles

  • 01Story photos only display for 3-5 seconds by default, so you must earn extra watch time.
  • 02Text that requires reading makes viewers hold to pause, extending watch time and signaling engagement to the algorithm.
  • 03A story with no call-to-response is a wasted promotional slot.
  • 04Use it strategically for launches, not every day, or followers tune out.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Go Single

Post only one story for the entire 24-hour period. Let existing stories expire or delete them, and hold future stories so nothing dilutes the single slot.

Pro tip A single story concentrates all viewer attention and taps into completion behavior.

Watch out Don't stack it with other stories the same day — that defeats the point.

  2. 2

    Make it Text-heavy

Use multiple sentences of on-screen text on a plain background, or a selfie with your face small in the corner making the relevant expression. Avoid talking-head video.

Pro tip Seven of Brock's top 10 stories are just white text on a plain black background.

Watch out A 60-second talking-head story gets skipped; there is no rewind and people forget subtitles.

  3. 3

Add the D — DM automation

Include a prompt telling viewers to reply with a specific keyword to receive something, usually a free resource. This is the most important element.

Pro tip Route the keyword reply into an email-capture flow so views become subscribers.

Watch out Without the D you will not get maximum views — the reply action is what drives the reach.

In the wild

The plain-black-background story

Brock reviewed his most-viewed stories of all time and found that seven of the top ten were nothing more than white text on a solid black background — no video, no production.

Simple text slides consistently outperformed his polished video stories in watch time and reach.

DM automation across the top stories

When Brock did the math on his best-performing stories, roughly 35 of the top 36 all included a reply-with-a-keyword DM automation prompt.

The presence of DM automation was the common denominator behind nearly all of his highest-viewed stories.

Common mistakes

Yapping in a 60-second talking-head story

Long talking-head stories get skipped because viewers can't rewind or fast-forward and often have subtitles off; text-heavy slides hold attention instead.

Using the STD story every single day

Overusing it annoys followers and burns its impact; it works because it is reserved for moments you genuinely want to promote.

Skipping the DM automation

Without a reply prompt the story generates no engagement signal and no captured leads, so it never reaches maximum views.

Is it for you?

Best for

Creators and small businesses with an offer, launch, or lead magnet who want maximum story reach and captured leads.

Not ideal for

Everyday behind-the-scenes documenting where casual, low-stakes trust-building is the goal.

STD is how you get your maximum story views. And it stands for Single, meaning that you're only posting one story for those 24 hours.
