Your tone tells the prospect why you're really asking the question.

Miner argues tonality is how prospects decode your intention: are you asking to manipulate them into buying, or because you genuinely care about their consequences? A concern tone — lowered voice showing empathy — makes them trust and open up. A challenging tone triggers emotion and is used to open consequence questions before shifting to a concern tone. He stresses that body language affects how your tone sounds even virtually or on the phone, so it can't be fully taught from a book.

Origin

Miner built his tonality system from behavioral science and years in the sales trenches, concluding that tone and body language — not words alone — determine whether prospects emotionally open up.

Core principles

  • 01Tone is how the prospect interprets your intention behind every question you ask.
  • 02A concern tone signals genuine empathy and makes the prospect trust and open up.
  • 03A challenging tone triggers emotion; pair it before a concern tone.
  • 04Even on the phone, body language shapes how your tone sounds.

How to run it

  1. 1

Read the prospect's tone, not just words

When they answer 'yeah, I could see how that could work' with uncertainty, hear the meaning behind the tone rather than the literal yes.

Pro tip Their tone tells you whether closing now will produce an objection.

  2. 2

Lean in with a concern tone

Say 'you didn't seem so sure when I asked that — what's going on, you can tell me' while lowering your voice into a concern tone that shows empathy.

Pro tip The concern tone makes them feel you're genuinely concerned for them, so they trust and reveal more.

  3. 3

    Sequence challenge then concern

Open a consequence question with a challenging tone to trigger emotion, then end on a concern tone: 'what's going to happen to your job at that point?'

Pro tip The tone shift is what makes the hard question feel like empathy, not attack.

  4. 4

Use body language to shape tone

Since body language affects how your voice sounds, use it deliberately even on the phone or video so the prospect starts to trust you.

Watch out Tonality and body language can't be learned from a book alone.

In the wild

The uncertain 'yeah, could work'

A prospect answers a commitment question with an uncertain tone. Instead of closing, Miner leans in with a lowered concern tone: 'you didn't seem so sure — what's really going on, off the record?'

The prospect trusts him more, opens up about the real hesitation, and an objection is defused before it's raised.

Common mistakes

Closing on the literal words

Hearing 'yeah, could work' and immediately trying to close ignores the uncertain tone and usually produces an objection.

Is it for you?

Best for

Sellers who have the right questions but still trigger distrust.

Not ideal for

Purely text-based selling where vocal tone is absent (though word-softening still applies).
