Trucks defines the zone as a state where you are impenetrable — confident, clear, flowing, at full speed, with the world fading away. Crucially he frames it not as luck or mood but as a version of your identity you shift into. That version must be architected in advance, using the six levers, before it can be activated in real life. He extends this to multiple identities: the Anthony who played football is a different identity from the one parenting his son or the one on stage, and each carries a different level and channel of intensity. Having several is normal — the skill is understanding each one and bringing it out when needed.
Origin
Trucks noticed as a professional footballer that game day required flipping a switch into a different persona, and that the aggressive identity he built in the weight room did not vanish when he retired — it simply stopped being the one he needed to express. Recognising that identities persist and can be summoned became the basis of the zone identity concept.
Core principles
- 01The zone is not a mood — it is a version of your identity you shift into.
- 02You must architect the zone identity before you can activate it.
- 03We carry different identities for different walks of life, and that is healthy, not fragmentation.
- 04An identity you stop expressing does not disappear; it waits.
- 05Control over which identity you express is control over your outcomes.
How to run it
- 1
Recognise the zone as an identity, not a mood
Identify the moments where you were impenetrable, clear and at full speed. Treat that state as a version of you rather than a lucky mood.
Watch out Most people are not even aware this is happening, which is why they cannot repeat it.
- 2
Architect it on the six levers
Define what your zone identity believes, thinks, does, habitually repeats, how its mindset is anchored and what it is proud of.
- 3
Build the habitual actions that install it
Design the actions that let you habitually become that version, so it is available rather than accidental.
Pro tip Time invested returns both a skill set and an internal identification — box for five years and you don't just have skills, you are a boxer.
- 4
Activate and channel by context
Learn to switch the identity on for the context that needs it and channel its intensity appropriately — stage directness is not field aggression.
Pro tip The identities you're not expressing still exist; you're not being fake, you're choosing the expression.
In the wild
Trucks says his calm, gentle public persona is simply the only identity he needs to express right now. If he is travelling with his family and someone approaches them, the Anthony who played football still exists — he just does not need to express him day to day.
→ Understanding that identities persist and can be summoned gives vastly better control over life and outcomes.
Trucks describes arriving at a coffee shop, scrolling his phone, looking around, then putting his head down. For the first five or ten minutes he is focused on the fact he is trying to focus. Then he surfaces and three hours have vanished.
→ The same pattern applies to a discipline system: days of conscious effort, then flow, then months later the results are simply there.
Common mistakes
Waiting to feel the zone
Treating the zone as something that arrives means it never reliably arrives. It must be architected before it can be activated.
Believing multiple identities means being fake
Different identities in different walks of life do not make you a different person — a different part of you is being expressed. Suppressing this costs you control.
Is it for you?
Best for
Performers, athletes, speakers and operators who need reliable access to a high-flow state and clean context switching.
Not ideal for
People whose issue is baseline function rather than peak access; architecting a zone identity presupposes a working foundation.

“you have to actually craft that you architect that before you can activate in your life”
